Clinical and molecular analysis of human reproductive disorders in Brazilian patients BJMBR
Latronico,A.C.; Costa,E.M.F.; Domenice,S.; Correa,R.V.; Kohek,M.B.F.; Arnhold,I.J.P.; Mendonca,B.B..
Several genes that influence the development and function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal-axis (HPG) have been identified. These genes encode an array of transcription factors, matrix proteins, hormones, receptors, and enzymes that are expressed at multiple levels of the HPG. We report the experience of a single Endocrinology Unit in the identification and characterization of naturally occurring mutations in families affected by HPG disorders, including forms of precocious puberty, hypogonadism and abnormal sexual development due to impaired gonadotropin function. Eight distinct genes implicated in HPG function were studied: KAL, SF1, DAX1, GnRH, GnRHR, FSHß, FSHR, and LHR. Most mutations identified in our cohort are described for the first time in...

Effect of Ethanol Extract of Whole Plant of Trichosanthes cucumerina var. cucumerina L. on Gonadotropins, Ovarian Follicular Kinetics and Estrous Cycle for Screening of Antifertility Activity in Albino Rats International Journal of Morphology
Kage,Devendra N; Malashetty,Vijaykumar B; Seetharam,Y. N; Suresh,P; Patil,Saraswati B.
Ethanol extract of whole plant of Trichosanthes cucumerina L. var. cucumerina was evaluated for antiovulatory activity in adult rats. The ethanol extract at the doses 200 and 400mg/kg body weight (orally) affected the normal estrous cycle showing a significant increase in estrus and metestrus phases and decrease in diestras and proestrus phases. The extract also significantly reduced the number of healthy follicles (Class I-Class VI) and corpora lutea and increased the number of regressing follicles (Stage IA, Stage IB, Stage IIA, and Stage IIB). The protein and glycogen content in the ovaries were significantly reduced in treated rats. The cholesterol level was significantly increased, whereas, the enzyme activities like 3b-HSD and 17b-HSD were...

Is the infertility in hypothyroidism mainly due to ovarian or pituitary functional changes? BJMBR
Armada-Dias,L.; Carvalho,J.J.; Breitenbach,M.M.D.; Franci,C.R.; Moura,E.G..
The objective of the present study was to examine whether hypothyroidism affects the reproductive system of adult female rats by evaluating ovarian morphology, uterus weight and the changes in serum and pituitary concentrations of prolactin and gonadotropins. Three-month-old female rats were divided into three groups: control (N = 10), hypothyroid (N = 10), treated with 0.05% 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU) in drinking water for 60 days, and T4-treated group (N = 10), receiving daily sc injections of L-thyroxine (0.8 µg/100 g body weight) during the last 10 days of the experiment. At the end of 50 days of hypothyroidism no hypothyroid animal showed a regular cycle, while 71% of controls as well as the T4-treated rats showed regular cycles. Corpora lutea,...

Melatonin in maturation media fails to improve oocyte maturation, embryo development rates and DNA damage of bovine embryos Scientia Agricola
Takada,Luciana; Martins Junior,Alicio; Mingoti,Gisele Zoccal; Balieiro,Julio César Carvalho; Coelho,Lia Alencar.
Melatonin (MEL) acts as a powerful scavenger of free radicals and direct gonadal responses to melatonin have been reported in the literature. Few studies, however, have evaluated the effect of MEL during in vitro maturation (IVM) on bovine embryos. This study tested the addition of MEL to maturation medium (MM) with no gonadotropins on nuclear maturation and embryo development rates and the incidence of DNA damage in resulting embryos. Cumulus-oocyte complexes were aspirated from abattoir ovaries and cultured in MM (TCM-199 medium supplemented with 10% fetal calf serum - FCS) at 39ºC and 5% CO2 in air. After 24 hours of culture in MM with 0.5 µg mL-1 FSH and 5.0 µg mL-1 LH; 10-9 M MEL) or 10-9 M MEL, 0.5 µg mL-1 FSH and 5.0 µg mL-1 LH, the oocytes were...

Seasonal variation in the reproductive activity of male goats raised under tropical climate conditions R. Bras. Zootec.
Dias,Júlio César Oliveira; Veloso,Cristina Mattos; Santos,Madriano Christilis da Rocha; Oliveira,Carlos Thiago Silveira Alvim Mendes de; Silveira,Camila Oliveira; Iglesias,Erick; Maitan,Paula Piccolo; Sanglard,Letícia Maria Pereira.
ABSTRACT This study analyzed seasonal variations in the testes, the concentration of sex hormones, the parameters of fresh and thawed semen, and the sexual behavior of male Alpine goats from a temperate region in a tropical climate and possible interference with fertility. The maximum and minimum temperature and luminosity were recorded daily, while seminal, hormonal, and behavioral assessments were carried out every fortnight. The maximum and minimum temperature (°C) and luminosity (h) were recorded daily always at 17.00 h. The scrotal circumference (cm), testicular volume (mL), volume (mL), appearance (creamy, milky, aqueous) and coloration (white, white-yellowish, and yellowish) seminal, turbulence or mass movement (0 to 5), progressive spermatic...

Social and reproductive physiology and behavior of the Neotropical cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus under laboratory conditions Neotropical Ichthyology
Alonso,Felipe; Cánepa,Maximiliano; Moreira,Renata Guimarães; Pandolfi,Matías.
In this work we describe for the first time the social and reproductive behavior of the Neotropical fish Cichlasoma dimerus (Heckel, 1840) [Perciformes: Cichlidae], endemic to the Paraná River basin, using a comprehensive-integral approach, including morphological and physiological features. This substrate breeding fish has biparental care of the fry and presents a dominance hierarchy that determines access to breeding territories among males, and to males with territories among females. Gregarious behavior associated with a pale body color, was observed before reproductive behaviors started. Afterwards, a dominance hierarchy was established through aggressive interactions. Territorial individuals had bright body color patterns and non territorial an...
